Gift Boxes: Priced on What's Inside, Not Just the Box
A gift is really a container — its trade value is an estimate of the average worth of everything it could contain, weighted by how likely each outcome is. That's the same expected-value logic used for eggs, just applied to a wrapped box instead of a hatchable pet. Seasonal gifts tied to a specific holiday event usually have the richest possible contents and the biggest value swing between "opened" and "still sealed."
Sealed vs. Opened Gifts
Traded for its expected value across everything it could contain. Appeals to players who want the surprise, or who plan to resell the sealed box itself once it's retired.
Once opened, whatever came out of the gift is valued on its own — as a pet, pet wear item, or whatever else it turned out to be — completely separate from the box's original price.
Why Some Gifts Keep Climbing Long After the Event Ends
Once a seasonal gift stops being sold, the supply of sealed boxes is permanently capped. If the contents included any pets or items that later became sought-after, unopened gifts from that event can become collector items in their own right — sometimes worth more sealed than the sum of their expected contents, simply because the box itself is scarce and nostalgic.

If you want a specific item that might be inside, open it. If it's from a retired event and you're trading long-term, some collectors hold gifts sealed since a scarce, unopened box can hold or gain value.
Is a gift's listed value guaranteed if I open it?
No — the listed value is an average across all possible outcomes. What you actually receive could be worth more or less than that average.
Are gifts only available during seasonal events?
Most are, which is exactly why timing matters — a gift you can buy today for standard Bucks may become a scarce, trade-only item within weeks of its event ending.
